United Nations Watch

May 5, 2008

Daniel Hannan at the UK Telegram has an update on the latest United Nations actions.
At the top of the list, so-called UN “peacekeepers” in the Congo have been encouraging elephant poaching!

Other UN highlights include:
– betraying the Bosnian Muslims in Srebrenica.
– illicitly running oil-for-food scams with Saddam.
– ordering its local commander not to seize the arms caches that were about to be used for the Rwandan genocide.
– UN officials been accused of selling arms to the Congolese militias.

Remember kids, democrats wants to base US foreign policy on what these guys want.

UN covering up its involvement in sex slave trade

April 28, 2008

From the BBC:

The UN has covered up claims that its troops in Democratic Republic of Congo gave arms to militias and smuggled gold and ivory, the BBC has learned. . . . These are not the only allegations to have been brought against peacekeepers in DR Congo.

In December 2006, former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan said Moroccan troops had been involved in widespread sexual abuse.

“There have been crimes such as rape, paedophilia and human trafficking,” he said, shortly before leaving office.

HT to Mr. Reynolds, who correctly points out that this won’t get much MSM play since there is no Anti-American angle.

Meanwhile, at Turtle Bay…

April 14, 2008

Yet another UN scandal, to the surprise of no one who pays attention.
Doug Ross has the Executive Summary:

Executive Summary: the UN has facilitated a “fraudulent” market worth tens of billions of dollars that was justified by a critical report; this report was authored by the very project developers and “auditors” who would profit from the report’s publication. This appears to be a major UN scandal that could surpass the Oil-for-Food Program in terms of total economic impact.

Setting the WayBack Machine…

February 15, 2008

To one year ago today, we get the “Clinton Odor”

Amazing how fast corruption’s odor trails the Clintons. Just as Hillary announces she’s running for president as her own woman, we now learn her brother got loans he never had to repay. Same old grifters.

That should be a warning, because the seedy memory of the Clinton scandals has faded since Bill and Hillary left the White House in 2001, pardoning criminals, signing book deals and perhaps carting off the silver on their way out.

The couple abused the office of the president by selling political favors in exchange for campaign contributions. The two were so shameless in shaking money out of those who sought White House access that one collaborator, Johnny Chung, compared their operation to putting coins in a subway turnstile.

In return for campaign donations, they allowed U.S. technology to be sold to the Chinese, rented out the Lincoln bedroom to Hollywood second-stringers, indulged in improbably profitable commodity trades, and, for their finales, pardoned a long string of atrocious criminals, confident that their last-minute abuse of office would be forgotten as the nation turned its focus to a new president.

As we gear up for the 2008 election, voters should think long and hard about whether they want another eight years of these ethics as Hillary presents herself as a potential first female president.

Three years ago today, UNSCAM probe finds Kojo Annan up to his elbows in Blood for Oil

Kojo Annan, the son of U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, played a far more extensive role than previously revealed in a company that won a key contract under the scandal-plagued Iraq oil-for-food program, Senate investigators have learned.
Investigators also have uncovered documents suggesting that Benon Sevan, the U.N. official who oversaw the seven-year program and was suspended last week, had a much more direct interest in laundered oil deals handed out as bribes by Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein under the program. One Iraqi internal investigation put Mr. Sevan’s profits at $1.2 million, nearly 10 times the previous estimate.

Four years ago today, good news from Iraq

That when dying and bleeding, beset by the flower of terrorism, with pistol to set against automatic rifle and grenade, the Iraqi police did not ask for help from 82nd Airborne. They asked for ammunition.

Revisiting the UN’s Carbon Footprint

December 28, 2007

That gigantic footprint doubled in size.

AMID talk of offsetting the hefty carbon footprint of the United Nations climate conference in Bali, organisers missed a large elephant in the room.

The air-conditioning system installed to keep more than 10,000 delegates cool used highly damaging refrigerant gases – as lethal to the atmosphere as 48,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide, and nearly the equivalent of the emissions of all aircraft used to fly delegates to Indonesia.

With hawk-eyed representatives of more than 100 green organisations present, it was probably the worst place in the world to commit an environmental faux pas.

HT to Mr. Reynolds

How serious is that crisis?

December 12, 2007

This Is London reports:

The UN secretary-general today called on world leaders for immediate action on climate change – before flying thousands of miles to the US for a music concert and then leaving in the interval to jet to Europe.

It’s hard to take them seriously when they don’t even attempt to practice what they want to inflict on the rest of the world.

Just how much of a crisis is this again?

December 10, 2007

Curt at Flopping Aces points out this interesting bit from the UN Boondoggle in Bali:

The science on climate change is indisputable so the world must now act to limit greenhouse gas emissions or face “abrupt and irreversible” change, the head of the Nobel prize-winning U.N. climate panel said on Sunday.

But Rajendra Pachauri, head of the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), said the industrialized world did not have a moral right to force poorer nations to slash emissions that may stunt their growth.

Curt then draw the correct conclusion:

Only a politician looking for a Socialist paradise would have the gall to say that the world is facing “abrupt and irreversible” change unless we reduce greenhouse gas emissions but that developed nations don’t have a “moral right” to ask less developed nations to do anything to avoid this catastrophe.

Soooooo transparent. It seems to be more of a policy to harm developed nations rather then saving the earth.

Read the whole thing. Hardly surprising, the UN bandits are cherry picking the data to make their case and crushing any dissent.

The Heritics were lucky they were not burned at the stake!

December 7, 2007

Probably just because that would have “contributed to global warming”, although much less so than the swarm of private jets.

They will just never be able to get any politically connected academic funding again.
The Herald Sun Reports:

The United Nations has rejected all attempts by a group of dissenting scientists seeking to present information at the climate change conference taking place in Bali, Indonesia.

The International Climate Science Coalition (ICSC) has been denied the opportunity to present at panel discussions, side events, and exhibits; its members were denied press credentials. The group consists of distinguished scientists from Africa, Australia, India, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The scientists, citing pivotal evidence on climate change published in peer-reviewed journals, have expressed their opposition to the UN’s alarmist theory of anthropogenic global warming.

As Mr. Reynolds puts it, this is a “CRUSHING OF DISSENT.”

On the Ecology front…

December 5, 2007

In Texas, “environmentalists” are suing to block a wind power project.

The swarms of private jets to a resort location in the tropics to discuss “global warming” story I blogged about earlier is getting more coverage.

UN Conference to promote Global Warming.

November 26, 2007

They claim it is about Global Warming, but if they believe their own press releases, they would be holding a teleconference. Scott Kirwin at the Razor did the math showing just how much CO2 they dumping into the atmosphere by holding a conference on “Global Warming” in the tropical location of Bali.

I will update this post with better numbers as I find them. However my estimate is that the UN conference in Bali will spew over 40,000 metric tons of CO2 into the atmosphere in air travel alone. This CO2 has the warming effect of just over 122,000 metric tons of CO2.

According to this Wikipedia article, trees planted in the tropics remove 22kg of CO2 from the atmosphere per year. That’s roughly 45 trees needed to remove one metric ton of CO2.

So in order to cover the 40,000 metric tons we would have to plant roughly 2,000,000 trees in the tropics.

Glenn Reynolds has stated, “I’ll believe it’s a crisis when the people who say it’s a crisis start acting like it’s a crisis.” It’s difficult to argue with that sentiment. Imagine a conference to fight illegal drugs being attended by participants who were stoned, or holding a meeting to combat obesity at an all-you-can-eat buffet. Are global warming skeptics the only ones who appreciate the irony here?

Mr. Kirwin’s numbers are probably low, since he calculated them based on the UN officials flying business class. Commercial airlines are not good enough for the self-appointed World Elite. As I noted before, the airport at Bali doesn’t have enough tarmac to handle the number of private jets chartered to bring the conference attendees.
