Quote of the Day

December 13, 2009

You ever come across raccoons in the outdoor trash can at 11:30 or so at night? As soon as they’re exposed by the beam of the flashlight (by the way, how much CO2 does the beam of a flashlight put into the atmosphere?), they turn on you with fangs and paws and let you know what follows will be a short conversation with very little talking involved.
Currently, climate scientists are raccoons hip-deep in statistical garbage and you should approach them with caution because they are unarmed (with facts) and dangerous.

Climate Change

December 19, 2008

First off, Climate Change is a hard scientific fact. The Earth’s climate has change drastically over time and odds are that it still will. Keep in mind that most of that extreme fluctuation has happened before Homo sapiens arrived on the planet and there has been recorded climate change before the Industrial Revolution.

So when “supposedly” smart people like soon to be VP Joe Bieden says that he thinks that climate change is 100% due to the effects of man, you have to wonder about just how long he’s been on crack.

With actual real science, if the facts don’t fit your theory, you change your theory. With the Cult of Algore “Global Warming” conspiracy types, there is a solid history of changing the facts to fit their so-called “theory”.

One of the early and most blatant ones was the “Hockey Stick” graph used in the infamous Al Gore propaganda film. In order to get that “Hockey Stick” graph, which they needed to “prove” their so-called “theory”, it was necessary to both edit out relevant data and hack the algorithms to edit out both the Little Ice Age and the Medieval Warm Period.

Continuing that policy of editing the facts to fit their so-called “theory”, is Seth Borenstein’s propaganda piece disguised as a “science” article. Note his very carefully selection of dates. Yup, there was a brief warm period during the Clinton years, but it has been cooling since then. A fact Borenstein is very careful not to note, except for the rather bizzare statement that a global cooling trend “actually illustrates how fast the world is warming.” No facts or cites to back that up, just an unsupported “proof by assertion.” The article also has the typical watermelon America bashing, leaving out the fact that the US has slowed it’s rate of carbon emissions more than the Western European countries that signed the Kyoto Treaty. He also engages the typical “Bush Bashing” by leaving out the fact that it was President Bill Clinton who killed the Kyoto Treaty by not sending to the Senate for ratification. President Clinton could read the writing on the wall, and the unanimous Senate vote stating that they opposed the treaty. Yup, every single democrat present (98 Senators voted) voted against the Kyoto Accords before they were presented to the Senate.

How have actual Scientists responded to Borenstein’s article? Noel Sheppard has compiled a short list:

In his latest screed, he screams: “global warming is accelerating”

How then does he explain the fact that the mean global temperature (as measured by satellite) is the same as it was in 1980?

How can global warming be “accelerating” when the last two years have seen dramatic cooling? Is this guy totally removed from all reality?????

He completely ignores any evidence contrary to his personal beliefs, and twists everything to meet his preconceived notions. — David Deming, University of Oklahoma

Global warming is not “accelerating”: global warming has stopped. There has been no statistically significant rise in (mean global temperature: MGT) since 1995 and MGT has fallen since 1998.

The Earth has been warming from the Little Ice Age (LIA) for 300 years so, of course, the warmest years happened recently. But that warming from the LIA peaked in the El Nino year of 1998. MGT has been near but below that peak for the last 10 years.

Arctic ice advances and recedes over decades. 2007 saw a minimum in Arctic ice cover in the short period that it has been monitored using satellites. But 2008 saw the most rapid growth in Arctic ice cover in that same period and Arctic ice cover is now back to the average it has had in the period. Also, 95% of polar ice is in the Antarctic and Antarctic ice is increasing.

Nobody can know if the recent halt to global warming is temporary, permanent or the start of a new warming or cooling phase. But it is certain that anybody who proclaims that “Global warming is accelerating” is a liar, a fool, or both. — Richard S. Courtney, a UN IPCC expert reviewer and a UK-based climate and atmospheric science consultant.

There is a lot more. Go read it all.

There is more at Hot Air as well.

Cutting back on pollution is a “Good Thing.” Promoting Junk Science to line Al Gore’s pockets and support Socialists put out of a job by the fall of Communism is a “Bad Thing.”

CNN Meteorologist Chad Myers chimes in with some actual rational thought on the subject.

About that Global Warming thing…

November 25, 2008

As I’ve said before, I’m a big fan of Global Warming.
Weather Channel co-founder Joseph D’Aleo and other scientists are not.

Armed with statistics from the Goddard Institute for Space Studies and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Climate Data Center, D’Aleo reported in the 2009 Old Farmer’s Almanac that the U.S. annual mean temperature has fluctuated for decades and has only risen 0.21 degrees since 1930 — which he says is caused by fluctuating solar activity levels and ocean temperatures, not carbon emissions.

Data from the same source shows that during five of the past seven decades, including this one, average U.S. temperatures have gone down. And the almanac predicted that the next year will see a period of cooling.

HT to Ed Morrissey at Hot Air, who notes:

The global-warming movement exists to provide cover for statists who demand central control over energy production. That’s an inconvenient truth that has begun to emerge as global temperatures fail to meet expectations of increase. Rather than admit that more research is needed, global-warming activists have increased the hysterical tone of their efforts, demanding immediate action and giving dire predictions of catastrophe without it.

Over 31,000 scientists have now signed onto the Global Warming Petition Project, demanding more skepticism and a return to scientific inquiry into climate change rather than political propaganda. They face an uphill battle in convincing the beneficiaries of research dollars from Washington to risk their funding by acting like scientists.

Global Warming Cultists: A reality free zone

November 21, 2008

You see quotes like this, “especially with the world finally seeing the effects of global warming”, in regards to “carbon emissions” and you have to wonder what reality these people are tuning into?

Earth to cultist! It hasn’t been getting any warmer on a global scale for the past decade!

We haven’t even seen swings in climate lately that we have in fairly recent (on a global scale) history. Such as wheat grown on Greenland or the Thames freezing solid for months.

Climate change happens. It’s a naturally occurring process. Given that one of the most common weather patterns for a good chunk of North America is to be under hundreds, or even thousands, of meters of glacial ice, I say bring on the “Global Warming!” Those who pay attention to such matters prefer that to “Global Cooling.”

The seas rise a few meters and the Kennedy Compound submerges, along with Streisand’s mansion. Big Whoop. Temps drop a handful or two of degrees Celsius and we loose a lot of farmland.

The warmest October on Record

November 17, 2008

…really wasn’t. The books were cooked with September data.

Kyoto chickens are coming home to roost in the EU.

September 23, 2008

By way of AoSHQ is the story on how EU businesses are not happy with the restrictions placed on them by the Kyoto Protocols.

Well, now the chickens have come home to roost. European business leaders are threatening to take their businesses somewhere else where the environmental restrictions are not so damaging. They claim that the new carbon emissions offset programs amount to a “tax” (which they are, the EU just didn’t want to call it that) and that the restrictions will cost “44 billion” a year in the next seven years.

China and India have no such restrictions and are exempt under the Kyoto treaty. Germany and Italy (both with some of the highest unemployment in Europe) are starting to wonder if these EU environmental demands shouldn’t be scrapped while the head of the EU is confident that Sarkozy, with his environmental revolution campaign promise, will help ram it through the EU council.

Barak Obama’s Fear Mongering

June 9, 2008

The really sad part is that enough liberal idiots out there buy into bad junk science and will believe the shit he is shoveling them.

By way of Flopping Aces is this ugly bit of fear mongering by the democrat party candidate for President of the United States of America:

We can’t afford more of the same timid politics when the future of our planet is at stake. We are already breaking records with the intensity of our storms, the number of forest fires, and the periods of drought. By 2050, famine could force more than 250 million from their homes. And if we do nothing, sea levels will rise high enough to swallow large portions of every coastal city and town.

Dude, try 2-6 inches a Century! To “swallow large portions of every coastal city and town”, it would require a sea level increase of a dozen or two feet in decades.

This also ignores the historic record of global warming periods being periods of growth and expansion, mostly due to more land mass being available for the growth of food. It’s the periods of global cooling that typically result in wide spread famine.

But then the left has never let a “big lie” stand in the way of their raw naked lust for power.

Know the science before making accusations

May 24, 2008

I had a friend tell me, in a very accusatory fashion, “Dude, you don’t even believe in Global Warming.”
I replied that I didn’t believe in the Cult of Algore, but scientific study has shown that the planet has clearly been getting warming since the end of the Little Ice Age in the middle of the 19th Century. To which my accuser replied, “The what?” So I explained to him about the well documented period where the Thames froze solid enough that the city of London had “Ice Festivals”, where people built shacks on the in the middle of the river and people walked out to them for a good three months out of the year. This was well documented in the literature and newspapers of the time. “So,” I continued, “the planet is obviously warmer than it was during the Little Ice age. The question is will it get as warm as it was during the Medieval Warm Period.” To this bit of actual scientific data, as opposed to the Cult of Algore scare mongering, he replied, “I don’t know about that.” So, I explained that this was the period prior to the Little Ice Age, where temperatures were warmer than they are now (and there is no evidence that Manhattan was under water then). There are records of wheat being grown in Greenland and that the London area was good wine country at this time. Even today, there are street names and other parts of London that reference vineyards and wine production. This was well before the Industrial Revolution, so clearly “man made green house gases” had nothing to do with that global warm period.

The actual science that I presented failed to convince my friend, I think it was because his wife is “True Believer” in the Cult of Algore, which has been proven to cherry pick and even twist data to fit their model, and has been filling his head with crap. I pointed out that there was a lot of real data available for anyone to check. Hopefully he took the time to do his own research rather than accept the junk science of the Cult of Algore.

The reality behind the Cult of Algore…

February 20, 2008

Those stubborn facts just keep getting in the way of the Cult of Algore!

The drop from January 2007 to January 2008 “appears to be the largest single year to year January drop for the entire GISS data set.”

More from The Weekly Standard and the CBC:

Satellite images are showing that the cold spell is helping the sea ice expand in coverage by about 2 million square kilometres, compared to the average winter coverage in the previous three years.

“It’s nice to know that the ice is recovering,” Josefino Comiso, a senior research scientist with the Cryospheric Sciences Branch of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Centre in Maryland, told CBC News on Thursday.

“That means that maybe the perennial ice would not go down as low as last year.”

The cold is also making the ice thicker in some areas, compared to recorded thicknesses last year, Lagnis added.

“The ice is about 10 to 20 centimetres thicker than last year, so that’s a significant increase,” he said.

You won’t be seeing this data on the MSM/DNC. As Michael Goldfarb points out, “I’m starting to think that the left only pays attention to the Arctic in the summer–when it’s supposed to melt.”

The Heritics were lucky they were not burned at the stake!

December 7, 2007

Probably just because that would have “contributed to global warming”, although much less so than the swarm of private jets.

They will just never be able to get any politically connected academic funding again.
The Herald Sun Reports:

The United Nations has rejected all attempts by a group of dissenting scientists seeking to present information at the climate change conference taking place in Bali, Indonesia.

The International Climate Science Coalition (ICSC) has been denied the opportunity to present at panel discussions, side events, and exhibits; its members were denied press credentials. The group consists of distinguished scientists from Africa, Australia, India, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The scientists, citing pivotal evidence on climate change published in peer-reviewed journals, have expressed their opposition to the UN’s alarmist theory of anthropogenic global warming.

As Mr. Reynolds puts it, this is a “CRUSHING OF DISSENT.”
